Very well said. I think this post will help many people out there. And I just want also to inform all the job seekers that there is a good news. The Job Search Websites offers desktop software so that they can apply for multiple jobs automatically.

Most of the people neglect this and often face problems. This post would surely help to build in a good balance of professional and personal life on the web.

Kevin

I think you sum it up nicely with "Just use common sense", but that seems to be often forgotten.

I've interviewed candidates at a previous job, and I absolutely Googled them before meeting with them in person. It's not just one sided, I'd hate to recommend someone for a job and it turns out to be a bad fit for them. If I found posts they wrote about how much they hated UML, but the position they're interviewing for requires a substantial amount of UML, I think I'd be doing everyone a favour involved by passing on them.

I also blog, and I wouldn't mind if I were passed over for a job because of an opinion I shared on the internet unless it's taken out of context. The real concern I have is that I share an opinion, but change my mind down the road, but that original opinion is read years later and taken as present day truth.

There are always risks with everything we do, but I think social networking and blogging is too good of an opportunity to connect with like-minded invididuals and learn more about yourself and your profession to pass up. Just use common sense (like with everything else in life). :)

Addy

Part of the problem is that people are used to being mostly private. They are not familiar with the lack of privacy that is typically associated with the internet. So, they get upset that what they say can be used against them.

That being said, I am not sure that you need to stay positive all the time. Some negativity is OK, like complaining about a defective product or something, but it also can't be constant.

Also, thanks for stopping by.

I'm glad you brought this up, that's why its always always good to stay positive on your stream.

As social networks grow we ought to be aware of the privacy concerns as well, what me might say today (good or bad) can easily be referenced tomorrow..

Someone i was talking to on Twitter said they were worried about privacy on Google Buzz, i replied "You should have thought about that before you joined Facebook, let alone Buzz." :-)

Relevant post, thanks - hopefully some of the jokers will get it..
