If you want to learn programming from square one, and not get bad habits along the way then start with http://htdp.org/ and PLT Scheme. Once you are done you will know enough to then learn any other language and code properly in it.

I'd recommend 'Go' as a starter language as it's brand new accept it doesn't really exist in the real sense except in some pixy imaginary sense. Can't be downloaded and configure by me right now using command line args etc. Support is so poor that I'd avoid like the plagu - just another geekgasm that all spilled all over the carpet horrible - mess. If I have to build my own nails before I hammer them I'm not happy - the geekgasm movement is not helping.. AT ALL

IMO, the solution is simple - look at the industry - not necessarily which web sites are biggest, but which are fastest, and most reliable and find out what they use. c c c c c
For web, LAMP stuff is best

JavaScript is quite a capable programming language. HTML/CSS are not in the same league.

VB.NET and C# it's all you need. VB.NET is NOT entry level like one commenter said.
Silverlight, ASP.NET can be used with either. Get to grips with XML then XMAL. One step at a time. Get basic books first (better still use the web). Get express copies of either or both, Bob's your Uncle and Fannies your Aunt.

Learning a programming language is exactly like learning an instrument. The more effort you put in the better you become. There are no shortcuts. Unless you want to be a roadie and not a rock star! :)

>>I would suggest looking into what schools and colleges are teaching to get an idea of what will be big in 5 years.

Actually that's a lagging indicator. Usually universities are the last ones to update because they follow the trends very conservatively.

If you want to know what's hot and what's coming up next, take a look at what big corporations are advocating (google, ibm, sun, oracle, etc)
