Michael,
If you read some of my posts at Mashable, I have consistently said they are doing some very interesting development. As you say though, they are seen as bumbling. It may seem unfair, but management is what is seen, not what cool stuff they have in the works. We can only wait and see what they do.

Rob,

I find myself mildly obsessed with Yahoo! They have some major muscle under the hood but their lack of cohesive identity is stunning. During Yang's brutal Web 2.0 interview, he seemed to say that Yahoo! wanted to be three different things- a starting point, an app platform and a streamlined ad server. Yahoo! allowed themselves to be seen as the bumblers while Google is seen as the scientists. This is an unfair perception. Yahoo! has plenty of "smart" projects in the works. I agree with you that focus is their main issue. Yahoo! can't even decide on what color they want to be- are they red or purple? When you have focus on user experience you lead. I'm still holding out a modicum of hope for them. They have the right stuff, now line it up and roll it out.

Thanks Cass.

I do try to keep my opinions timely if possible :) As you say, Yahoo has some great properties and traffic. I just can not understand why they seem to be sitting and waiting. I totally agree with you, they have to be proactive.

Great post Rob, and very timely. You're absolutely right in that perception is (almost) everything - today even friends who do not keep up much with tech were commenting on how Yahoo seems to be in trouble.

Yahoo has such great properties and traffic, I hope they take some of your advice and focus, acting and projecting a positive image pro-actively rather than reactively.
