Considering that there are now so many social networks catering to such a wide range of niches, my biggest problem is finding ones relevant to me and related to my specific interests or product niches. Google seems to be inefficient and returns alot of irrelevant results. A good resource that I use to find them is this search engine for social networking sites.

@calinazaret
For things like plurk/twitter/identica a lot of people have started promoting their digg/mixx/reddit submissions through automated APIs. It is better than getting asked through IM all the time, but it is still noise.

Regarding your having a friend but not following what they say comment, this becomes more prevalent in social media sites. Granted it probably sounds familiar to those with a family too :) "I love them to death, I just don't want to listen to them." (I forget who said that to me once)

I think this line pretty much sums it up for me: "Remember, if someone subscribes to you that does not mean that you need to reciprocate." If you really don't care what someone has to share or say, why friend them?

Just today I was thinking about all the people on plurk who are on my list of friends but whose timelines I don't follow for various reasons. Some were constantly begging for diggs or just plain uninteresting so I took them off my timeline, but it seemed cruel to unfriend them. Then I realized that it's entirely possible that they're not following my timeline either. So we're "friends", but neither of us care what the other has to say. Seems incredibly absurd, but how often are our connections just like that?

@Mark
I admit that your posts got something moving in my head. I just could not find the right way to pull one in.

One of the many reasons for this post is because I have even started trimming my subscriptions on FriendFeed and ensuring that I "really" want to subscribe to someone.

You've probably seen my thoughts on this in last week's six degrees/hyperconnectivity posts, so no need to go into them in detail.

If you get the right set of experience and personalities in your personal network, it probably doesn't have to be huge or even large.
