I think EA's The Sims does the best job of making a 3D world useful with The Sims 2. It’s a lot more interactive and could be more informative than the rest and is definitely a pioneer in its field. Education is one of those items where people have to think outside the box a little.

@Corvida

Education is one of those items where people have to think outside the box a little. People are comfortable with a presentation, so why not a more immersive environment. What about learning a language where the other avatars look like natives to the country and you are seeing historic landmarks and tourist attractions. That would definitely make learning a language way more interesting.

3D worlds aren't very useful as far as Lively and Second Life goes. However, I think EA's The Sims does the best job of making a 3D world useful with The Sims 2. It's a lot more interactive and could be more informative than the rest and is definitely a pioneer in its field.

I'd prefer them on my desktop rather than over the internet for better quality and speed. Then again, you still have a ton of graphical problems as you touched on.

In the end, I think they're more fun and games than anything else. I wouldn't look to them for dramatic educational purposes.
