See there was a real reason. I did not think calinazaret would be censoring herself.

It's a derivation of "get your shit together" - I've never heard "poop in a pile" before, but people I used to work with said "poop in a group". Same thing. Our dear Ms. Calinazaret is clearly to nice to use such profane words as shit. Personally, I have no such qualms.

@calinazaret
As far as I can tell, people are looking for stability more than an alternative. Plurk is a very interesting alternative for some people, but others just don't like it. My understanding is that Identica was meant to be "identical" to Twitter, just an open source version. If they ride the momentum and implement a ton of features, it could get interesting. Twitter can maintain their leadership if they don't take too long in fixing their issues. However, they are not making anyone comfortable with what they are telling people.

Also, I have never heard "poop in a pile" before. I understand the meaning, but where did you get that one?

@honest_ape
I am curious if other developers will shut down as well. I don't think Twitter is going away, but they could lose their following which is just as bad.

@Jean-Marc
I understand the open argument, but sometimes proprietary solutions are just better. Before Indeti.ca, very few people had heard of Laconi.ca. It will be interesting to see how this changes things.

I'm sure I'll be the very first person to say this, but it seems like a lot of people are looking for an alternative microblogging platform, and it's the beginning of the end for twitter. Identica looks a little too much like twitter to be very interesting to me, I mean, it's almost an exact clone.

Twitter may eventually recover if they fix the multitude of problems their service has, but the novelty of their service is gone and they need to "get their poop in a pile" in order to stay competitive.

Build on sand and suffer the consequences. Some users do not understand why I keep warning them against using proprietary services. Balance of power is a major issue. Only a decentralized open service guarantees that all stakeholders remain in control. That is why federated services such as SMTP or XMPP always win in the end. As feature poor as Identi.ca and the other Laconi.ca instances are currently compared to Twitter, they are open and that is why they are attracting the huge interest that will push them forward. Open is the killer app.

This brings up an interesting related point: If you create a service based on another service, you are at their mercy. If they are down, you are down. If they close shop, you have to follow suit.

This was not the case, ostensibly, that Tweeterboard stopped, but it certainly makes one think about such things.

As usual, great article, Rob.
