What's this twitter thing everyone keeps talking about? It sounds almost like an updated warbbler, which I'm been using since the 80s.

@James,

LinkedIn has a totally different purpose than most social sites, so do not worry about that one. Having "enough" followers is an interesting concept. I can not imagine following thousands of people as the noise would be deafening. I only follow around 70 right now, and I am not sure how many more I want to follow.

For a long time I was loathe to jump on the social networking bandwagon. Now that I've joined sites like Facebook and LinkedIn they have hardly added anything to my life. However Twitter is something altogether different. It's great not having to worry about the looks of your profile or what apps you should have. There is a lot of noise but I usually pick up a few interesting ideas and links too. Don't have enough followers yet but I look forward to being able to ask questions and get feedback from everyone.

@Colin

I understand what you are saying, but I am not getting that vibe from my current twitter stream. Maybe I just have not had those conversations yet :)

In any case, I am hooked. It already bothers me when TwitterFox or Twhirl has problems connecting.

The simplicity of Twitter is the main benefit - it is designed for quick thoughts and beyond that acts as a facilitator. It connects people in a way that other services often can't. Once you have that connection it is easier to move a conversation to another, more suitable, medium.

@Julie
Thanks for the praise. One of the problems with Twitter is the balance of following and tweeting. The real question is what are you there for? Personally, I am just trying it out first, and I will figure everything else out later.

@Robin
Very good point about listening. I have a few people who I follow, mostly just to listen to. Scoble is the perfect example. There is a lot of noise, but a lot of good signal in his stream as well.

I'm a big fan of Twitter, in at least part because of the factors that you've identified. I see Twitter as much (if not more) about listening than talking, but with the added advantage that you can target your listening.

And once you find the way of it, you can target that listening to the industry leaders and newsmakers (at least within the internet/social media area) the follow them directly, and that can be invaluable.
