@Robin

Facebook is hard to figure out yet. Some of the applications are purely entertainment and that may be good enough for many users. However utility will become important, instead of just existence. If you look at LinkedIn, they have added the questions/answers stuff in the past few months. That is how your network and you provide value. Not sure yet how this really translates in the Facebook case.

Excellent article. I think the seperation between social media for early adopters and social media "for the masses" is well worth examining. I spoke a little bit about this recently on my own blog, where I identified the average web user as a tourist whereas we might consider ourselves residents.

I probably underestimate the value of Facebook. I've been very doubtful about its value in the past, because I don't think it provides any great functionality. But I think I'm realising that actually most users don't want a great deal of functionality in the same sense that I do.

Ah, I forgot about that part. Currently, Buzz does not accept post submissions, they only include content from sites that they approve.

No problem at all. This conversation around what's an early adopter, and how things are going to get mainstream or not... is fun, but premature, in my opinion. Some analyst firms look at a hype cycle, where something gets hyped, then you get disillusionment, and then a plateau, and growth. We'll watch as each of these services does the same thing. Some might not ever get out of the trough of disillusionment, and others will be doing TV ads in a few years. :-)

@Louis, my humblest apologies. I went through the post a bunch of times because I know spell checkers only work for some things.
